As part of my ongoing campaign to encourage creative people to take up coding, I made this video to show how easy it is to create visual effects in HTML5 canvas.

Zero to Angry Birds in 30 minutes

At Aral‘s Update conference last year I put together this live coding demo to show how easy it is to work with the Corona SDK to create casual games for iPhone and Android.

PixelPhones

PixelPhones turns each phone in the audience into a single pixel in a huge display. Running in the browser on iOS and Android, the phone’s use JavaScript to connect to a WebSocket server made with openFrameworks.

I’ll be continuing to work on this throughout 2012 and there’ll be a couple of very large scale tests. More info on the PixelPhones : blog post

CreativeJS.com is a spin off from my popular CreativeJS training courses. There seemed to be such a demand for this kind of JavaScript based work that I brought a few friends together and set up this website. Pyrotechnics to the People :Interactive digital fireworks

Pyrotechnics to the People was all about bringing fireworks closer to the audience, rather than lighting the touch paper and standing well back. This large scale projection with motion detection allowed you to create rockets simply by waving your hands around.

Lunar Lander trails

Lunar Lander Multi user

I made a pretty authentic Lunar Lander, and, as a test of multi-user technology, adapted it to broadcast players’ positions. After leaving a test running overnight I woke up to see the beautiful trails image above. I quickly forgot about making a multi-user version of the game and instead concentrated on different rendering mechanisms. I love that I accidentally created an artwork and I’m even featured in a book about generative art.

I’m now extending this project to create installations with real time plotting on paper to create human generated accidental drawings. You know, to make it look like I did it on purpose and all. :)

Glowstick voting

The modern day equivalent of the clap-o-meter, the glow stick voting system allows an audience to judge via frantic glow stick waving. This has now been used at several award ceremonies!

Dream Machine

Another large scale building projection, the Dream Machine featured the work of many different animators in a 30 minute show. We asked the audience to tweet and text us their dreams and I animated them around the edge of the building. I also created a dynamic growing ink splodge and steam punk style countdown clocks. Made with Processing.

Big and Small

Probably my biggest ever project, I was technical director on this BBC project for Plug-in Media, the digital agency I founded. With a team of 15 over the best part of 9 months, we made a rich realtime 3D generated environment and a safe place for kids to play and discover.

This project won a BAFTA in 2009.

I’m slightly embarrassed by this, but seeing as it’s become somewhat of a cult phenomenon I’m including it. Kitten Conveyorbelt was my project to teach myself how to program iPhones. It’s a “relaxation experience”.
